Legal Interpreting & A.I: Why Become A Language Interpreter?
Legal interpreting is so much more than "knowing two languages." To become a language interpreter bilingual adults must understand the structures of the legal proceedings they work in. Not only so the language interpreter knows what is going on but so that they can correctly inform Limited English Proficient (LEP) clients. So then, why do we need bilingual adults to become a language interpreter for court when there is A.I? Why do we still need legal interpreting training at all?
1. A.I is challenging legal interpreting rights for LEP adults
Under Wisconsin law, people with a Limited English Proficiency (LEP) have the right to a qualified language interpreter when they appear before the courts. In June 2025, Wisconsin Public Radio reported that many backlogged court cases were due to the limited supply of language interpreters. The result of which equates to postponed justice, which usually means that more people spend more time stuck in jail awaiting trial because they cannot understand English. Whether or not they are even guilty is irrelevant.
Many republican lawmakers in Wisconsin have proposed using A.I and other technology to alleviate the backlog. In fact, lawmakers have argued that local governments will save money from the burdensome expenses associated with finding qualified court interpreters. But most courts do not have cameras or microphones that would allow recipients to understand, and communicate with their attorneys privately. Which would effectively erode constitutional rights to a fair and speedy trial.
2. Becoming a language interpreter is more than being bilingual
To be a competent legal interpreter you must ensure that every single statement, emotion and nuance is conveyed accurately between people who speak different languages. Meaning that legal and court interpreters must also understand specialized legal terminology and the cultural nuances that shape conversation. Because one single mistake or change in tone can change the meaning of an entire statement. Here's just a few examples of what you will learn in our legal interpreting training course:
• "Legalese" or the legal terminology frequently heard in court
• Courtroom protocol and procedures
• Ethics of legal interpreting
• Protecting client confidentiality
• How to interpret accurately
• Different legal interpreting techniques and how to apply them:
° Consecutive legal interpreting techniques: Commonly used in depositions and client meetings, this interpreting style requires translation after each person finishes speaking.
° Simultaneous legal interpreting techniques: Often used during trials, conferences or hearings, this interpreting style requires language translations in real-time as the speaker is talking.
3. Becoming a language interpreter through our legal interpreting training course prepares students for a successful future
To become a language interpreter in 2026 means you will have to use A.I. But that doesn't mean A.I is going to take your job.
In fact, utilizing the technology will make every professional language interpreter better and more efficient at their jobs. But make no mistake: A.I technology is not even close to replacing human interpreters. Especially given all of the errors A.I is making already, the legal system would just continue to become more backlogged than it already is. Here's a few reasons why students prefer our approach to legal interpreting training:
• Our expert instructors teach every class LIVE through video chat conference calls. They work hard to create an engaging learning environment that makes our students WANT to learn in real time.
• Role play scenarios and personalized feedback creates a more productive and effective teaching system, that will prepare students for the real world
• Alumni appreciated the ability to learn alongside peers. Which created a network of professionals outside of the classroom, rather than being left to their own devices
