Legal Interpreting Training, Your Future & A.I: Explained
Legal interpreting training teaches bilingual adults how to provide language translation services in legal settings. That's why we require that you prove your fluency in both English and your target language before our legal interpreting training class can even begin. But why?
Because we teach professional language skills not entire languages.
Think about this scenario for just one minute: someone is going through the immigration process, or they were detained by boarder patrol, maybe they are seeking asylum in the United States, or maybe someone is trying to set up a business for the first time. In each of these scenarios, the person has a Limited English Proficiency (LEP) meaning they cannot speak English well, or even at all. They need so much more than a bilingual adult to help them communicate. Because what they actually need is a bilingual adult who understands the legal system, terminology and intricacies in both languages. That is what legal interpreting training is for.
We teach professional skills, NOT entire languages
- • Live-streamed online learning: We literally bring the classroom to you, with our face-to-face webinar instruction. Thus allowing students to ask direct questions, their expert instructors, and get personalized feedback in the moment.
- • Practical role-play: Hands-on learning in a remote environment will involve re-enacting real scenarios like school meetings, medical consultations and immigration hearings that are relevant to your course.
- • Industry specialized coaching: We give you the opportunity to work directly with with native speaking professionals, in order to sharpen terminology, memory skills and note-taking techniques
- • Cultural competence: When you learn with us, you develop professional credibility with ethics trainings along while also taking cultural differences into account with interpreting work.
- • A built-in community of professional interpreting peers
- • Continuing education opportunities that provide more ways to grow and learn in different and/or related interpreting fields.
What does legal interpreting training teach?
Our 45-hour, 7-week online legal interpreting training course prepares bilingual adults for a career as a legal interpreter. Preparing you for "legal settings" can refer to anything from actual courtrooms, to meetings and other legal proceedings. Here is just some of what this course covers:
- • Language interpreter terminology for courtrooms
- • Courtroom protocol and procedures
- • Ethics of legal interpreting
- • How to interpret accurately
- • Real-world practice
- • Different legal interpreting techniques and how to apply them:
- - Consecutive legal interpreting techniques: Commonly used in depositions and client meetings, this interpreting style requires translation after each person finishes speaking.
- - Simultaneous legal interpreting techniques: Often used during trials, conferences or hearings, this interpreting style requires language translations in real-time as the speaker is talking.
Why even bother with legal interpreting training? A.I is just going to take over
... every industry is affected. So, you are just going to give up your entire future?
Artificial Intelligence is not evil or wrong - in fact, it is doing some incredible things for humanity. The issue is who is controlling it, and how those people intend to use it. There is no crystal ball that will foretell the future, but one this clear: A.I is already doing a lot to advance careers and expedite workload. Here's some ways that legal interpreters are already utilizing A.I:
- Predictive analytics: taking clients and complex trials requires a lot of record-keeping and paper work. For the legal interpreters already working, A.I can search queries between various data sets in seconds and readily provide:
-
- data analysis
- examinations of prior rulings
- discover historical precedent
- research findings that used to take weeks - months!
-
- Document review: every single legal interpreting case requires a lot of documentation. Which must be provided within a short turn-around time. For legal interpreters that workload is automatically doubled (two languages = two documents = double the fun!). Here's how A.I is already helping:
-
- document translation with human oversight
- creating a stored library that allows templates to be stored for future edited versions
- shortened legal review time
- improved accuracy
-
How will legal interpreting training help my future?
As of 2024, foreign-born residents make up over 14% of the U.S population according to the PEW research center. With an estimated 340 to 430 languages spoken across the continental United States, there is a growing demand for professionals who can bridge language gaps. Especially in legal settings. Whether it’s depositions, hearings, client testimony or consultations- legal interpreting training ensures that every single person - regardless of their native language - has a voice in the U.S justice system. Here’s what makes our legal interpreting training unique:
• Focusing on accuracy: ensuring exact meaning, tone and context
• Confidentiality: Keeping all case details private and secure
• Cultural understanding: Recognizing how social norms and etiquette influence testimony and behavior
• Role-plays and real-world case simulations
• Terminology & ethics taught by experts
