How To Succeed As A Remote Language Interpreter?

A remote language interpreter is someone who helps to bridge the gap between someone who can, and someone who cannot speak English. These language professionals often find work in medical and healthcare settings; but can work in other settings, too. Such as legal offices, government buildings, schools, and international businesses. Because the reality is: as more services move online, the demand for qualified interpreters grows.

... but why? "Don't you just need to be bilingual, and have good internet connection?"

Working as a remove language interpreter requires specialized training, sharp communication skills, and the ability to maintain accuracy during high-pressure conversations. In order to find success as a language interpreter, you must be very skilled and confident. Luckily, our remote language interpreter school teaches you all of them...

3 skills every remote language interpreter should master:

1. Simultaneous interpreting

This skill requires you to interpret what is being said while the speaker is still talking. You might see this in action if you attend a conference, or watch political debates and news stories that have segments involving speakers from another country. As a remote interpreter, you must be able to do this with precision - as any delay in audio or background noise can throw you off. To do this properly, however, you need to stay calm under pressure. And be able to listen, process and speak all at the same time because there are not going to be any breaks.

2. Consecutive interpreting

Mastering this skill, means you have learned how and when to step in. For example, many medical appointments require this skill. Because the doctor will speak a few sentences in English and then pause. During this time, the language interpreter will repeat the message in a language the patient can understand. This might sound easy, but it requires an excellent memory, attention to detail and strong note taking. And it's going to be your job to maintain accuracy, tone and flow... even while you deal with tech issues or long pauses.

3. Telephonic interpreting

This is exactly what it sounds like: Over the Phone Interpreting (OPI). And it is one of the more challenging skills to master. Because you can't see the speaker that means you aren't picking up on their body language or facial expressions. You don't know if someone is confused or if they can even hear what was just said. Regardless, your interpretations must remain clear, accurate and professional. This means that you must guide the conversation from the beginning. You need to learn how to take control, give instructions, and manage multiple speakers so that everyone can be heard... all without seeing who you are speaking to.
