Diversity and Inclusion Training...What Is It, and How Can It Help You?
From diversity and inclusion training to advanced medical interpreter training we have rolled out a few new course offerings recently. Although they both provide the tools to become a successful interpreter, both of these courses are slightly different than our standard curriculum. Advanced medical interpreting is a 30 hr supplemental medical interpreting course, meaning that students must enroll in our standard medical interpreting program (or an equivalent course) as a prerequisite requirement✅. As the name implies, advanced medical interpreting is an accelerated course that prepares students to pass NBCMI (National Board of Certification for Medical interpreters) or national medical interpreting exam for an official certification. Diversity and inclusion training on the other hand, is exactly what you think it is...or is it?
1️⃣ Diversity and inclusion training? 🤔 What's that course about?
Our diversity and inclusion training course is another 12-hour, 3-week supplemental training program. In other words, this course is designed to provide additional support✅ to professional interpreters with medical, legal, immigration, or community interpreter based specializations. The course is open to those who don't want to become interpreters as well- like individuals who are asked to participate by their employers Human Resources (HR) department. It is through this program that students learn some of the most important strategies to engage in dialogue and encourage relationship building with people with differing religious, cultural, gender, socio-economic, mental or physical identities. As our bilingual students pursue careers working with individuals of diverse backgrounds, we must ensure every student is prepared to handle some of the more difficult aspects of the job. Such as:
- Confronting biases, prejudice and discrimination based on personal identifiers (listed above)
- How to handle a situation involving sexual harassment
- Identifying micro-aggressions
- How to accommodate people with different needs and abilities in the workplace
- Navigating difficult conversations and overcoming barriers at work
2️⃣ How can a diversity and inclusion course help me?
A career as an interpreter, regardless of specialization, is a worthwhile endeavor for any bilingual individual. Getting to work with people from different countries, backgrounds, abilities and identities challenges our biases and helps us become more empathetic human beings. With this line of work, it is an unfortunate reality that others are not as understanding, welcoming or as patient as they should be. As professionals like video remote interpreters make language more accessible for everyone, it is important to know how to promote diversity, and resolve conflicts when and if they arise.
