"After medical interpreter school, how do you get that first job?"
Enrolling in medical interpreter training school is the necessary first step. You learn the skills, techniques and vocabulary to do the job right. But it's up to you to decide how you want to use those tools. Here's a few ways you can do just that:
- Be where the opportunities are by attending medical conferences, interpreter meetups, local job fairs, and networking events you could make those valuable connections that lead to successful opportunities in the future.
- Make yourself known in your community! Designing a business card or flier advertising your services is absolutely old-school! But half the battle is letting the public know you exist. Leave them in strategic places with high foot traffic like busy coffee shops, the local library, city hall and community centers- and be surprised by how many referrals you can get from taking that action!
- Check out job fairs at hospitals and even the larger community ones held at universities, local libraries or public schools.
- Build your online presence join as many interpreter groups as you can find on networking sites like LinkedIn, and Facebook for example. Make a profile on freelance sites like UpWork for example and post about your availability. You can even go the extra mile and purchase a reasonably priced domain for a simple website where you can direct inquiries to!
The point is: you have got to put yourself out there! Sometimes, all it takes is just 1 introduction or conversation to land your first job. In order to be successful, people need to know about your services. For them to know about you, you have to make yourself as accessible as possible. Because the reality is that there is a real need for bilingual medical interpreting. Just don't let the fear of a job hunt stop you!
