Our Remote Interpreter Course Makes You An Expert In 3 Ways
Our remote interpreter course is taught by expert instructors, who turn their bilingual adult students into experts, themselves. Utilizing video conference technology, each instructor creates a highly engaging & useful curriculum that remains unparalleled in the remote learning industry. Most online training companies will record a series of lectures that are uploaded to a private platform for students to access on their own time. Others will encourage students to teach themselves through textbook material. We choose to do things a little differently- believing that remote learning still requires teachers to instruct.
Meeting on a weekly basis, students bring the classroom to their homes via video conference webinar technology. Thus providing our students the opportunity to ask questions and receive correction in the moment- something that other styles of online learning cannot deliver. In short, our remote interpreter course combines the convenience of remote interpreter training with all the benefits of a traditional, in-person learning experience.
For students who wish to pursue a career as a remote interpreter, choosing a training course can be intimidating. You want to make sure you are making the right investment, and we encourage prospective students to find the course that suits your needs. Here's 3 unique aspects about our curriculum...
3 skills you will learn in our remote interpreter course that will make you an expert :
1- Simultaneous interpreting
Simultaneous interpreting means that the interpreter listens to conversation in one language, and repeats it in another language at the same time. Providing this service at a high level requires an immense amount of focus, attention and memory on the part of the interpreter. To do so as a remote interpreter, through VRI (Video Remote Interpreting) technology is a whole other skill in itself.
Typically sitting in a soundproof booth, the interpreter will listen to the speaker through headphones and speak into the microphone that transmits into the listeners earphones. They provide live interpreting services via VRI equipment in the moment, as the original speaker is talking. This method has been utilized in many situations, such as: high-profile conferences, large meetings, webinars, broadcasts, court hearings and more.
2- Consecutive interpreting
While similar to the simultaneous method, consecutive interpreting requires a different set of skills. The key difference with this method, is that the original speaker will periodically take a break. The interpreter will then repeat what was said in the other language for the listeners. Essentially, the speaker and interpreter will take turns speaking.
For remote interpreters, paying extra careful attention to what exactly is being said, and how it is being said is important. They must be accurate, and mindful of natural breaks that the speaker is taking and use that time to interpret for the listeners. Employing consecutive interpreting skills usually occurs during press conferences, medical consultations, virtual meetings and more.
3- Telephonic interpreting
Telephonic interpreting is arguably the most difficult method of interpreting for remote interpreters. Not only can you not see the speaker, but you can't see the listener either. Nor do you have any control over your environment. As the name implies, telephonic interpreting is done over the telephone. Recipients of telephonic interpreting include the elderly, people living in rural areas, and generally those who aren't as technologically savvy as other demographics.
This means that interpreters must make every effort to drive the phone call from the beginning. This includes telling the listener that they must be on a landline phone if at all possible prior to your appointment. Clearly tell them that they still have to speak into the microphone if they are putting you on speaker. Explain that they should have a piece of paper and a pen handy to write their questions down as they come up. This will eliminate continuous interruptions, and give the listener time to ask what they need at the end.
