"What does a medical interpreter do?"
If you already have the language proficiency, you are halfway there. But being bilingual is not enough to work as a medical language interpreter. Medical interpreters attend doctor's appointments (either physically or remotely) with patients who speak little to no English. This means they must understand all of the medical terminology the doctor uses, and all of the cultural nuances the patient uses in their native language. The language interpreter must be incredibly informed and highly skilled... because one tiny mistake can cause serious physical harm to the patient. They typically work either for hospitals, primary care facilities or a local translation agency. But they also commonly work in medical billing, emergency rooms, clinics, answering emergency calls etc.
"How is the medical interpreter training program designed?"

Once enrolled in our 7-week, 60 hr medical interpreter training course, students must continually participate in classroom discussions. Submitting assignments involves demonstrating that you understand core concepts like:

• Basic anatomy and physiology concepts and medical terminology like:
- The endocrine system
- HIV/AIDS
- Diabetes
- Cancer (Oncology)

• Role-play medical scenarios so you can practice interpreting real situations
• How to accurately interpret complex medical scenarios in real-time
"Are there added benefits to your interpreter school?"
Interpreter school can take your career as far as you want it to go. Successfully completing our standard medical language interpreter courses requires that you pass the final exam. Your interpreter school certificate allows you to provide language interpreting services in medical situations. But this is not a license.
If you want to become a licensed medical interpreter, you have to take your licensing examination through your states' National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI) or with the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI). In order to pass the licensing examination, you must prove that you completed interpreter school with formal instruction and training. And our standard course satisfies that classroom requirement!
