Language Interpreter Courses & Recovery After FAILING
Language interpreter courses provide a way for bilingual adults like to make a career that builds upon the language skills they already have. Our online interpreter school has many different subjects, that each provide a different way to become a language interpreter. For instance, medical interpreter training teaches the skills and techniques required specifically for medical interpreting. But for other students who don't want to work in healthcare settings, there are multiple different courses to choose from. Some might prefer to work in schools as an educational interpreter. Whereas others might be more suited for immigration interpreter training.
Whichever course you choose, you should know 2 things. First, that our language interpreter courses are different for a reason. Medical interpreting prepares you to provide interpreting services in hospitals and doctors' offices. If you enroll in that course, only to realize you really want to work in a courtroom to assist asylum seekers- you have to enroll in our immigration interpreting course. The curriculum, vocabulary, techniques and skills taught in each course are highly specific and the situations are vastly different. Second, every course has a final exam that you must pass in order to receive your interpreter certificate.
We have a performance standard that you must meet to receive your certificate of completion. Because we need to know that you can apply the concepts from class before we send you into the real world, where there are real-life, and very serious consequences for mistakes. Everything we discussed in class will be on the final exam. So as long as you were paying attention you should perform fairly well... But what happens if you enroll in our language interpreter school for healthcare settings, and you fail the fail the final exam?
Expectations for our language interpreter courses' final exam
The test: While each course varies, they all include a multiple choice section and a written section. These sections will cover vocabulary, rules, ethical dilemmas and rules you must follow as a professional interpreter.
The role play: For each course, the role play ensures that students can interpret in real time. Each student will need to demonstrate that they can apply what was learned in class in a controlled scenario. To pass, students must:
-
- this involves interpreting a conversation in real-time
- correctly interpret conversation from English to your target language of choice
- understand and correctly apply terminology into your role play
- make no more than 9 mistakes
Recovering after FAILING language interpreter courses
We understand that mistakes happen. It is part of human life, and making mistakes is how we learn. The important thing is to understand where you went wrong and deciding what to do so it doesn't happen again. Here's how you can recover based on your situation:
1. FAILED both the test and the role-play
If you failed both parts of the final exam, it isn't the end of the world. You are allowed to retake both parts up to 3 times.
If you agree that it is necessary, you may retake only a certain portion of the course. This requires an additional payment of $300 to re-learn that material. It allows you an additional 3 attempts to pass.
2. FAILED the test, but PASS the role-play:
Congratulations for passing the role-play! Many students find this to be the hardest part. If you have failed the written test, you are allowed to retake just the written portion. You would need to work this out with your instructor to coordinate your second attempt, and you have 3 additional chances to pass the written exam.
3. FAILED the role-play, but PASS the test
Failing the role-play is more common than you might think. If you fail the role-play, you are highly encouraged to practice, review your notes, and try again. You should coordinate additional role-play sessions with your instructor. If you continue to repeatedly fail this portion, you could either:
- Retake one section of the course for an additional $300
- Retake the entire course for the full price
