What is a TEFL Certificate? Is it the same as a TESL or TESOL certificate?
A TEFL certificate, which can be acquired from TEFL Courses, was developed to qualify participants to work as an English/ESL/EFL teacher in the U.S. and abroad. Qualified teachers with TEFL/TESOL certification are in demand not only in the US, but also in many other countries, especially in Spain, China, Vietnam, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Poland, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Japan, Russia, Argentina, and more. The list goes on!
When doing research about certifications for teaching English, you’ll come across a bunch of acronyms like TEFL, TESL and TESOL. These terms essentially refer to the same thing: teaching the English language to non-native speakers. The main difference between the three is the location of where you teach. To break it down:
- TEFL: Teaching English as a Foreign Language in non-native English countries.
- TESL: Teaching English as a Second Language in native English speaking countries.
- TESOL: Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages in both non-native and native English-speaking countries.
Of the three, a TEFL certificate is the most widely accepted and highly regarded certification outside the U.S. TESL and TEFL offer more specific and customizable training compared to TESOL. TESOL encompasses the teaching of both ESL and EFL language learners, which may not provide the specialized skills you need. If you’re considering which one to enroll in, your best bet is to opt for TEFL qualification, since it’s the most widely recognized teaching certification in non-native English speaking countries.
How do I get a TEFL Certificate?
To get a TEFL Certificate, students go through a minimum of 100 hours of coursework and training, as well as 6-20 hours of practicum to ESL students. This can be executed in 3 main ways: TEFL certification online, in-person or part-time. The most popular type, however, is a 4-week in-class intensive course.
Individuals interested in becoming English as a Second Language Teachers do not need to have previous teaching experience or a degree in education. You also don’t need to have prior experience flying abroad! A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is preferred, but it is not always required. You don’t necessarily need to be a native speaker in order to qualify. Depending on the employer, a foreign accent is not a problem. As long as you have suitable qualifications, perform well in an interview and are eligible for a working visa in the country where you are going to teach, finding employment should be a breeze.
The only requirement you need to have is fluency in the English language. If you speak fluent English, you can get an English teaching certificate. English is the only language that will be spoken in the classroom. To be accepted into TEFL Certification classes, non-native speakers of English are required to demonstrate an advanced level of spoken and written English by completing a 15-min ESL test. Just be eager to learn and teach and you’re all set to go!
