Thailand

Teaching English in Bangkok, Thailand Known as the “Land of Smiles,” Thailand is a Kingdom rich with culture, arts and tradition. English language proficiency in Thailand dropped relative to other countries and fell the most in Asia. Youths between the ages of 18-20 and adults 21-25 exhibit poorer English skills than those in the 26-30 age bracket. Thailand always has a demand for English language teachers. Chiang Mai and Phuket are two popular destinations for TEFL/EFL/ESL teachers. 

Education: A BA/BS 4-year degree is normally required to obtain a work permit in Thailand. A TEFL certificate from a TEFL Program is also required. A TEFL qualification, which can be acquired by enrolling in TEFL Classes, was developed to qualify participants to work as an English/ESL/EFL teacher in the U.S. and abroad.

Types of Jobs: Tutoring, private language schools and public schools.

Types of Students: School students, private students and business professionals.

Preferred Citizenship: USA, Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and South Africa. For non-native English speakers, a language proficiency equivalent of IELTS 6.5 or above is ideal. The average scores on the TOEFL and IELTS in Thailand are 7.6 and 5.3 respectively.

Typical Hiring Process: Face to face interviews are done for most schools. In some cases, interviews are done over Skype or phone calls.

Average teaching hours per week: 20-30 hours of classroom and prep time.

Average Monthly Cost of Living: Low, with an average of $550-800 USD. Some schools provide housing or an added stipend.

Average Monthly Pay: $950-1,300 USD.
 

Italy

Teaching English in Florence, ItalyItaly is home to some of the most unique architectural wonders of the world, including the Leaning Tower of Pisa and the Colosseum. People of Italy have a moderate level of English proficiency. Italy is one of the top countries for teaching English as a foreign language in Europe.  The major hiring seasons for these roles are in January and September. Rome, Milan, Naples and Florence are Italian cities with a high demand for English teaching.

Education: A BA/BS is required and a TEFL certification is commonly required.

Types of Jobs: Tutoring, private language schools and public schools.

Types of Students: Business professionals, children in summer camps and private students.

Typical Hiring Process: Interview in person in Italy.

Average teaching hours per week: 20-25 hours of classroom and prep time.

Average Monthly Cost of Living: $800 - $1,000 USD.

Average Monthly Pay: $1,200-$2,000 USD.
