2. "How much money does a bilingual medical interpreter make? Do they make more money than another type of interpreter?"
This really depends on training. If a students passes the 60hr online medical interpreting training course, the typical entry level salary with an interpreting agency or hospital is $25 an hour. 3. "How can I make the most money as a bilingual medical interpreter?"
The best way to maximize your earning potential is to invest in your experience. Just like medical students straight out of med school must earn more money by completing a residency, earning a doctorate degree and PhD- you must prove your competency by extending your education and becoming more experienced. Doctors and patients are trusting you, their English interpreters, to be their doctor's voice and give accurate information to their patients and you must earn that trust with experience. Students who wish to become licensed medical interpreters, must pass their state issued exam administered by the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters. This exam is similar to a doctor's medical licensing exam- in that it is a long standardized exam designed to see if you have the qualifications to work as a certified medical interpreter. While it is not mandatory, we offer an accelerated course to prepare students to take this exam.
