Become A Language Interpreter For School Children With IEPs

Become a language interpreter for school children and create a rewarding career as a bilingual adult. According to a 2021 report by the National Center for Education Statistics (NECS), 10.6% of United States public school students were English Learners (ELs). In other words, 5.3 million US students reported having a Limited English Proficiency (LEP) as of 2021. For context, there were roughly 50 million students were enrolled in public elementary school the same year.

Some may look at the 5.3 million LEP student statistic and think "that's a small number in comparison to the total students enrolled, so who cares about the minority?" According to the 2022 U.S census bureau, that number of LEP students (5.3 million) is still higher than the entire population of South Carolina (5.1 million residents) as of 2022. It is also higher than the entire residents of Los Angeles, CA (3.9 million people). It's even higher than small countries like Costa Rica (5 million people) and Ireland (4.9 million people).

All humans are born with the capacity for empathy. Because it is just like any other muscle we are born with... it must be exercised, or it could atrophy. So what can you do about the 5.3 million school aged students who can speak little to no English? Become an educational interpreter!

3 reasons bilingual adults should become a language interpreter for school children:

1. Parents and their children cannot advocate for themselves

Even for native English speaking parents, it is a very long and tedious battle to get a child qualified for an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). Which is a very detail oriented plan that outlines exactly what those special needs are and how to go about educating the child. It requires a lot of time and a lot of advocating on any child's behalf to get them the services they need. If it is overwhelming for fluent English speaking parents, imagine how hard it must be for LEP parents. Public service interpreting is a fantastic tool that really helps, but shouldn't be done with family members.

2. Teachers are overwhelmed & unsure how to be most effective

Nationwide, roughly 1 in 10 students qualifying for special education are also Limited English Proficient (LEP). There is a clear over representation of ELLs in special education, and teachers are overwhelmed as well. Because it is now solely up to them to determine why a child is struggling, when they cannot speak the child's native language either. How can educators decide if a child struggles due to a processing delay, or if they simply don't understand English?

3. Your work is essential

Around 71% of English Language Learners (ELLs) obtain a high school diploma, where the national average is 86%. And while there are a variety of other valid reasons why ELL students drop out, we can't ignore that they are. Educational interpreting at schools is essential work and every student in need should have access. Unfortunately, there aren't enough education language interpreters to go around.
