We want to collectively express our appreciation for our LC Mandarin language coach Tina Wang. We greatly benefited from her dedication and expertise over the 7-week course. She provided us with comprehensive training and helped set a solid foundation for our interpreting skill base.
None of us came in with prior experience in interpreting. Tina worked with us closely from Day 1, teaching us essential sight interpretation techniques like chunking and just interpreting what we know. She gave us many opportunities to repeatedly practice sight translation and role play, carefully listening to how we interpreted and giving us tailored and individualized feedback. She was able to help each of us see our respective patterns and tendencies and worked with us to course correct. Under her careful and focused coaching, we collectively ran through almost all the role-play scenarios in the student manual, and at the end of 7 weeks, improved significantly in speed, accuracy, and confidence in our interpreting skills.
Furthermore, Tina weaved real-world tips and scenarios into our sessions, helping us understand how medical interpreting worked in the clinical setting. She often went into detail to not just teach us the vocabulary but also help us understand what a specific medical procedure or visit type involved. She patiently and meticulously walked through each of the 500+ vocabulary words in the vocab list, explaining their definition to us and helping to reinforce our ability to commit them to memory.
Tina also highlighted a lot of scenarios and interpreting issues that may be unique to serving Chinese patients, which prepares us for issues we may encounter once on the job. She pushed us hard but also gave us a lot of encouragement along the way. We feel fortunate to have had such a highly skilled and dedicated language coach who went above and beyond to build up our skills and confidence and cannot recommend her enough to future Mandarin-speaking students.
All of us passed the course exams and came away with a rich set of skills to further pursue a medical interpreting career. Thank you Tina!
