Why Online Interpreter Training Programs Don’t Work

Can you really practice interpreting skills with a screen?

Instruction on any subject can be found via the internet, including online language training courses. It makes learning from home or on-the-go convenient. However, just
because you can take a course online, doesn’t mean you should. This is the case for online interpreter training programs that promise certification. Although many arguments can be made against online interpreter certification, we highlight three important ones below.

Interpreting is an Oral Skill:

  • Becoming an interpreter is not a simple task, and understanding how to be an interpreter means more than just knowing vocabulary. It requires fluency and an understanding of the sounds and context of the language.
  • Although you can learn vocabulary online, you won’t be able to practice speaking and understanding it in real time with a native speaker and students who can give you critiques and feedback.

Online Interpreter Certifications Aren’t Accepted at Hospitals:

  • Medical interpreters are in high demand across the country; however, an online certification is not enough to get a job as one.
  • Becoming a certified medical interpreter requires you pass a specific certification exam. The only way to be adequately prepared for this is to train with a professional in the field, in person. This way they can answer your questions in real time and provide you information on their own experiences as a medical interpreter.

Online Interpreter Certifications Don’t Guarantee Jobs:  Medical Interpreter Interview Hospital

  • Just like simply having a diploma won’t land you the job, a certificate won’t either. As with any job, networking as a professional interpreter is important for opportunities. You will have a hard time making connections with people working in the industry if you’ve never interacted with them in person.
  • In person interpreter training courses introduce you to the people in the field, give you experience in the actual job environment, and are often offered by companies who work with interpreters.

While online interpreter training can be an asset, as with any education the best way to get a full learning experience is with in-person instruction. When looking into how to become an interpreter we recommend seriously considering in-person training courses. This will ensure you have all the opportunities possible to become a qualified interpreter.
